It’s finally all come together! Having my room all sorted out really has made me start to feel like I’m all settled now. Like I’m a real New Yorker. It is the smallest room in the apartment, but somehow it was the last to get organized and decorated – and it’s the one I’m most excited about. I’m probably the most excited about this room because it’s *my* bedroom!
I hadn’t had to deal with any interior decorating in my adult life, really. In Chicago, I got all of my apartment from 2 stores and lived in the same place for 6 years. It was somewhat daunting doing my apartment and my bedroom specifically.. because your living space says so much about you and how you design and decorate it really is such an art form. I got to thank Brett for all the help in making my room come together. He’s got a knack for all of this – (it is what he does after all with Sweetfin!) and was so helpful with ideas and sourcing… thanks, Squishy!
For lighting in my room.. I get great light in the morning as my windows face east. Towards the afternoon and night, my space gets pretty dark. With no overhead lamps or lighting, I have two lamps that Brett helped me pick out. The one on my bedside table is the black Flask Lamp from Blu Dot and it fits perfectly in the corner on the table. I love how it contrasts and pops in the room! The other that sits upon my dresser is a Stone Table Lamp from Horne. This one is centered in my room, and I needed a lamp that was going to provide more ambient light than a typical shaded lamp. For my bedding, I was in the dark when it came to what I liked and a brand I wanted to use – then I found Boll & Branch. They’re a fair trade certified, organic cotton bedding + home company whose pillows and bedding are all chemical free an so comfortable. With a traceable supply chain and focus on a direct-to-consumer method Boll & Branch was really able to disrupt the bedding industry – which I’m all about. If you’re interested in new bedding and want to try Boll & Branch, I’ve got a discount code for ya! Get $50 off your first order with the code: 50JOHN Possibly my favorite part of the room is my gallery wall. My space is small and the wow-factor of my room is definitely the view. Looking onto the east river I can see the Brooklyn Bridge, DUMBO and the Manhattan Bridge. I figured my wall decor either needed to be minimal and not distract from the view or be outrageous and over-the-top. I had never seen a gallery wall that spanned over the corner of a room, but I had a vision of mine starting in the middle and expanding out. I want to give a big shout to my friends at Framebridge for making my dream a reality. If you’ve been sleeping on Framebridge – wake up!! They make it so easy to get custom frames for art, prints or literally anything you’d like to get framed. With free shipping and hand built pieces Framebridge is definitely the way to go if you’re hanging anything on your walls. It’s amazing how once all the frames were up, the place felt like home. I sourced the images from a few places:
- Jonathan Adler
- Juniper Studio Home
- Tappan Collective
- Gray Malin
- Natalie Obradovich
- Get the Gusto
- One Kings Lane
- Josh Yöung
And a few friends! Special Thanks to Nicholas Scarpinato, Ethan Hethcote, Jennifer Chong for your art. I’m so excited to get to see your pieces every day! If you’re interested in filling some wall space in your own home or apartment – frame your heart out here! When I posted a photo of my closet with Horderly, I got a bunch of questions about the shelving in my room. I’m glad some of y’all were as obsessed with them as I was. The system is from Blu Dot and it’s the Hitch Bookcase. With steel uprights and wood shelves, there are quite a few options of customizing the colors – or even adding a desk! The shelves look so beautiful and I can’t recommend this shelving system enough. On the shelves, I’m housing my favorite books (organized in a rainbow, of course), Monocle City Guides, and some décor pieces from West Elm!
Please let me know how you like my place! The whole process too much longer than I anticipated as there are so many moving parts when decorating a room .. not to mention my constant indecision!
